I am a redhead and when I was growing up let’s just say ‘staying calm’ was not in my nature. My Mother was constantly telling me to calm down, sit still, stop fidgeting. My emotions were not very calm either. When I was happy I was VERY happy…and conversely, when I was sad it felt like the end of the world.
I remember one instance when I came home from a pre-teen party and was upset because a boy I liked was holding hands with someone else. (I’m sure you can relate about now :)) Well, my Mom just couldn’t be ‘with’ my emotions as I lay crying across my bed. Her response was to try and control the out-of-control feelings by scolding me for being upset and declaring that I could never visit that house again.
Oh dear! No wonder I grew up feeling calm meant to oppress my feelings!
Calm is a State of Being
What I have learned, however, is that ‘calmness’ is a state of being that you can access beyond your very stormy at times emotions and your scattered monkey mind. It’s like a deep clear subterranean pool that exists in a pure, quiet and still grotto. Because you are a multidimensional being your emotions can be disturbed (like the choppy waters on the surface of the ocean) but in the depths, if you dive deeper, everything is calm and usually very OK.
Calmness is a reservoir of soul food. And this nourishment satisfies even the deepest cravings. Dropping into a calm space can feel like a refreshing swim in a cool lake on a hot summer day. All the cells of the body respond to this frequency with renewed energy and vitality.
Knowing and experiencing calm in the midst of the storms of life is comforting, steadying and grounding. We all have had times when the waters can get choppy. It’s easy to feel off balanced, scared and flip into a control mode that often times can make matters worse. Calming thoughts, calming inner practices can assist to keep a steady course and walk with a bit of grace.
Sure, discovering your calmness takes practice. Learning the spiritual self-mastery tools of observation, self-acceptance, self-compassion, self-forgiveness supports you to move beyond the static and confusion that often contributes to much of your anxiety, stress and overwhelm. Knowing how to clear these energetic disturbances is one of the keys.
